Update on Re-Entry Permit (Dec 02, 2015)

If reentry permit applicants are under age 14 or over age 79, they will not need to appear for a biometrics appointment as long as they submit passport photos with their initial reentry permit applications. The purpose of the biometrics appointment for such applicants is to capture a photograph since fingerprints are not required. By submitting the passport photos, they can avoid the need for a biometrics appointment for them who are not otherwise required to appear for biometrics capture.

To accommodate biometrics (fingerprint) appointment

USCIS confirmed that Application Support Centers will frequently accommodate applicants who appear prior to their scheduled appointment as long as they bring their biometrics appointment notice. It is also a good idea to bring other document such as outbound airplane tickets.

Or applicants may request expedited issuance of the biometrics appointment with the initial I-131 filing by including a written request and proof of the need for expedited biometrics, e.g., copies of outbound plane tickets, a letter from their employer abroad, etc.

Or applicants may call the National Customer Service Center at 1 (800) 375-5283 to place a service request after the I-131 has already been filed; note applicants must reference their client’s I-131 receipt number.

Finally, keep in mind that after a Permanent Resident (LPR) has been abroad for four years in the aggregate, in most cases, any issued reentry permit will be valid for only one year. See 8 CFR §223.2(c)(2).
